Planning: Using Images on Your Website

What do I need?

Photos and graphics that accent and emphasize your company's products or services.

Why do I need it?

Images set the tone of a web page. That is why your audience profile is important. The images you use should be tailored to that audience. A page full of text is daunting to most visitors. Images help break up the "gray space" they also draw attention to specific areas, subjects or points on a page.

Where do I get it?

Besides photos of your product, there are many websites that offer "stock photos" or clipart. And there are a lot of bad examples of sites using them. Consulting a professional designer would probably be a smart thing to do.

Can I...

Do it myself?

Yes, with some research. Read a few of the books about designing for the web and visit website you like to get an idea of how they use their images.

Learn How?

Yes. Part of the planning tutorial that we offer does include tips for using graphics, what works well, and some online resources to find your own.

We also have an "Building Your Business Website" workshop, a 3-day workshop that takes business owners through the process of developing a website strategy, defining requirements, creating a site map and layout, and lists image and copy writing requirements.

Hire a professional?

The images you use are an important part of the success of your website. It is a good idea to enlist the help of a professional designer who has the training and experience with website design.

Do without it?

The balance of images to content is very important.

Enter the coding phase.

Hints for Using Images

Images used for websites must be in gif, jpg or png format. You must own the copyright or have permission from the photographer or illustrator. It is not wise to use images downloaded off a website that is not a royalty-free stock site. Most images will need to be resized to fit the layout of your website. Make sure the image can be clearly seen at its final size.
