Web/Computer Skills for Business Environment:

Update Your Mind set, Refine Your Skill set

Skills necessary to succeed in today's business environment have changed dramatically over the past 5 years. Websites, once a status symbol, are now a vital part of business development. So, too, has the role of the average employee. In offices where one person may wear several hats, there's a good chance at least one of them requires a working knowledge of desktop computers and network protocols, and the other involves managing information for online consumption.

Careers in the "IT" field have changed dramatically in the past 10 years. Websites are no longer created by individuals, they have now evolved into a collaboration between management, marketing directors, IT departments and contractors hired for specialty services.

In this uncertain economy, companies have combined job descriptions, often requiring administrative positions include helping with email marketing and website updates. And a lot of hiring decisions will be influenced by someone's level of computer familiarity.

To help those returning to the job force, or changing careers, we offer onsite workshops and individual training to update skills, streamline performance, and identify time or cost-saving processes.

Basics You Won't Learn in Class Computer users who started using the windows OS after about 2003, have very little understanding of computer architecture, file extensions and interoperability. This may sound like a lot of information to absorb, but understanding the basics is logical, surprisingly easy, and takes less than a day.
  • Understanding drive letters, file naming conventions
  • Identifying file formats: Vector and Bitmap Graphics, database files, platform-independent formats.
  • Configuring programs, understanding preference settings.
  • Backing up files, transporting data, understanding file details

Power User Essentials: An amazing amount of productivity is lost every day by users "mousing around" to find the right menu or icon in any given program. Another source of inefficiency involves attaching incorrectly formatted files, or attempting to convert or locate original source data files. Become more productive by preparing your workspace and learning:

  • Organizing data drives with logical directories
  • Learn common shortcut keys that work with most windows programs.
  • Using file extensions to track progress and determine use
  • Create desktop "helpers" to avoid multi-step menus

Business Email Etiquette: Most employees spend an alarming amount of time reading and responding to group emails, finding important names, dates or passwords in a large list of sent mail. Emails use a significant amount of server space and often cause problems used incorrectly. Learn best practices for effective communications:

  • Trimming off excess content when forwarding a message
  • Saving and sorting important inbound and outbound mail
  • Using subject line to increase response
  • Using sig lines for marketing or reminders
